Kitchen Garden Bag Pattern

Practicality and prettiness combine in this 1940s inspired sewing pattern, which offers a choice of view 1 pleated onto a yoke and finished with a bow trimmed flap, or view 2 with a pleated front pocket and long tab flap.

Finished bag dimensions: 13” (33cm) tall 16” (41cm) wide excluding handles

Materials needed:

For View 1

¾yd (70cm) of 45” (115cm) or 54” (140cm) wide main fabric

½yd (50cm) of 36” (92cm) wide batting (or similar sew-in interfacing)

¾yd (70cm) of 45” (115cm) wide or ½yd (50cm) of 54” (140cm) wide lining fabric

½yd (50cm) of 36” (92cm) wide fusible interfacing for handles and flap

2 pieces x 1½” (4cm) square of craft interfacing (optional—for snap stabilisers)

1 magnetic snap set

Zip fastener 6” (15cm) long for interior pocket

For View 2

1yd (92cm) of 45” (115cm) wide or ¾yd of 54” (140cm) wide main fabric

½yd (50cm) of 36” (92cm) wide batting (or similar sew-in interfacing)

1yd (92cm) of 36” (92cm) wide or ¾yd (70cm) of 45” (115cm) wide lining fabric for bag lining, front and internal pockets

½yd (50cm) of 36” (92cm) wide fusible interfacing for handles/pocket/tab

1 magnetic snap set

Zip fastener 6” (15cm) long for internal pocket

2 vintage buttons approx 1¼” (30mm) diameter for flap trim

Suggested fabrics: Wool tweeds, plaids, corduroy or decorator weight fabrics
